Planetary Nebulas form when stars can no longer support themselves with fusion in its core. The outer shell is forced in, causing the star the heat up. High temperatures within the core drive the outer shell away in a brisk stellar wind, lasting a few thousand years. The remaining core then heats the distant gases causing them to glow.
